The EuroSafe Imaging campaign, launched at ECR by the European Society of Radiology (ESR), will support and strengthen medical radiation protection across Europe by following a holistic approach, said ESR President Prof. Guy Frija.
"The campaign, which brings together many stakeholders, focuses on promoting appropriateness in medical imaging, maintaining doses within diagnostic reference levels and emphasising the need to promote the use of up-to-date equipment," explained Prof. Frija.
In 2013 the Society published a statement on radiation protection according to its global, safe, and personal approach, and a survey on paediatric CT practices in Europe, which is still open for participation. It also organised an orientation session on radiation protection for senior radiologists.
The dedicated EuroSafe Imaging website offers information for patients, e-learning modules and information on dedicated radiation protection sessions during subspecialty and national societies events. This year will also see development of lists of criteria for safe radiological examinations
"We believe that this holistic approach is an important step towards joining forces for patient safety in Europe. And we believe too that the use of up-to-date equipment is of utmost importance for improving the safety of x-ray examinations. The ESr urges the European Commission to develop a European plan for the improvement of x-ray equipment, including CT across Europe", he said.

In addition, ESR has agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Multidisciplinary European Low Dose Initiative, a European platform dedicated to low-dose radiation risk research. The ESR is part of a consortium funded by the European Commission, which will run a project to provide European DRLs for children
and to promote their use so as to advance optimisation of radiation protection of paediatric patients, with a focus on CT, interventional procedures using fluoroscopy (abbreviated as IR) and digital radiographic imaging
