Cemented Cone stems were designed in 1994 from clinical results and mechanical finite element analysis in order to reduce loosening risks and to adapt to hip morphological features. Its tapered design allows to concentrate hoop stresses in the proximal area in order to induce new bone formation and reduce stress-shielding. The Cone system comprises of a complete line of stem sizes with proportionally sized femoral offset. Finite Element Analysis results confirm the prosthetic shape for stress optimisation. They indicate that: cement mantle must be as uniform as possible and must be at least 1.5 mm thick shape should be as straight as possible cross-section must be as circular as possible During its introduction into the medullary canal, the Cone prosthesis shape allows a homogeneous cement compression. Two different studies demonstrate a survival with good stability, ample range of motion, consistent circumferential cement mantle and adequate subsidence and rotation.[1,2] A proximal spacer and a distal centraliser allow for perfect positioning control and provides a continuous cement thickness between femoral stem and cortical bone.
