Crouse Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y., installed a Carestream DRX-Revolution Mobile X-ray System with Carestream’s specialised paediatric software to help enhance care in its neonatal ICU. The mobile system is equipped with Carestream’s wireless, small-format DRX 2530C detector that fits easily into a neonatal incubator X-ray tray. The cesium iodide detector is designed to deliver high-quality, lower-dose paediatric imaging. The hospital has a 57-bed NICU and is a regional referral center for high-risk neonatal ICU services.

“The DRX-Revolution helps our neonatologists improve care by delivering exceptional image quality and has also helped enable our staff to reduce dose by more than half. The ability to lower dose is especially important for pediatric patients due to the harmful effects of radiation on children and also because these very ill babies often require frequent X-ray exams,” said Brad Hellwig, the hospital’s Director of Radiology.

He adds that Carestream’s paediatric software helps the staff track techniques and exposures. “The DRX-Revolution automatically displays the previous technique so that we can ensure imaging consistency, which is especially important to help physicians detect changes in these very small patients,” he said.

“Physicians also report that being able to view images at the tubehead when they are inserting PICC lines and other devices is especially helpful because they no longer have to leave the bedside to verify correct placement,” adds Beth Wilson, the hospital’s Manager of Radiology. “This speeds the process and reduces discomfort for these very fragile patients.”

Carestream’s specially designed Paediatric Image Optimisation & Enhancement Software automatically adjusts and tailors image-processing parameters for any one of the seven paediatric body-size categories.

Changes to the noise suppression algorithm and detail enhancement feature are designed to help provide optimal image quality. Carestream’s Administrative Analysis and Reporting Software allows radiology staff members to measure and compare the IEC exposure index and other key parameters for each exam performed, including reasons for rejected images.

The Carestream DRX-Revolution Mobile X-ray System is a versatile mobile X-ray system that features a small footprint, exceptional maneuverability, excellent image quality and wireless communication of medical exams.
