The Boston Scientific S-ICD System provides patients protection from cardiac arrest without having to touch the heart or be implanted next to it. Unlike the more invasive abdominal ICD and transvenous ICD systems, the S-ICD is the world's first subcutaneous implantable defibrillator. It is positioned to the left of the heart on the outside of the rib cage, and under the armpit. Like the more invasive ICD systems, the S-ICD uses a pulse generator to provide life-saving therapeutic signals to the heart. Unlike the abdominal and transvenous systems, the S-ICD System uses a subcutaneous electrode to monitor and analyze the heart's rhythm, providing effective detection and conversion of induced and spontaneous VT/VF episodes. Use of the S-ICD system reduces the potential for systemic infection, eliminates any potential for vascular injury, and avoids the complications that can some times occur following the more invasive implant procedures.
