The new system, Acuson S2000 Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS), automatically acquires volume images, the first multifunctional US breast scanner to do so. The technology is now available to patients in Switzerland, France, Portugal, Norway and Germany.

The three-dimensional image acquisition is particularly suitable for the diagnosis of very dense breast tissue. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, dense breast tissue can increase the risk of breast cancer for women by a factor of five. While mammography will continue being the method of choice for breast cancer screening, also employing US examinations significantly increases the detection rate in cases of non-palpable, invasive breast cancer.

The automatic image acquisition also shortens examination time to less than 15 minutes. Coronal views of the tissue also accelerate diagnosis time.
