Camera-in-a-pill manufacturer Given Imaging announced that it received US Food and Drug Administration clearance for a pill able to provide visualisation of the colon, making it available to a global market of 3 million procedures per year.

The pill, a swallowed capsule endoscope entitled PillCam Colon, is designed for the detection of colon polyps in patients who had an incomplete optical colonoscopy.

According to Given Imaging, a developer of technology for visualising, diagnosing and monitoring the digestive system, there are 750,000 patients in the United States alone who experience an incomplete colonoscopy each year and who subsequently incur additional costs, as well as the inconvenience and risk associated with other procedures to complete the colorectal examination.

Medical device maker Covidien PLC said in December that it would acquire Given Imaging for $860 million, this transaction is expected to be completed by March 31.
