Dr. Michael Quintel Joins Sphere’s Medical Advisory Board

Leveraging extensive clinical experience within the intensive care setting, Professor Quintel will add both insight and support to the introduction of Sphere’s devices for the critical care environment, including the newly launched Proxima patient-dedicated blood gas analyser.
“Proxima addresses some important issues in the management of unstable critically ill patients. I look forward to advising Sphere Medical on this exciting development in critical care,” said Professor Quintel, the Director of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Emergency and Intensive Care Medicine at the University of Göttingen, Germany. He is also a member of the German Sepsis Society and an Investigator in the SepNet Sepsis Clinical Trial Network in Germany, participating in numerous sepsis and critical care trials.
In addition, Professor Quintel is a member of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) group on respiratory failure, and member of the scientific committee of the ECMOnet.
Professor Quintel will work alongside fellow MAB members: Professor Jean-Louis Vincent, Professor of Intensive Care at the Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Head of the Department of Intensive Care, Erasme University Hospital (University of Brussels) and Dr. Tom Clutton-Brock, Head of Anaesthesia & Intensive Care at The University of Birmingham Medical School and Associate Medical Director at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
Sphere's CE marked Proxima system represents the next step on in blood gas point-of-care testing (POCT) as it is attached directly to the patient through their arterial line, in-series with the blood pressure transducer. Without leaving the bedside, closed blood samples can be withdrawn frequently, analysed and then returned directly to the patient.
The Proxima system enables rapid and frequent delivery of blood gas results to aid early decision making and closer control of therapy for critically ill patients, whilst also conserving blood and reducing nurse dependency – all of which will ultimately improve patient outcomes.
