The report titled “Developing, Purchasing, Implementing and Monitoring AI Tools in Radiology: Practical Considerations” was jointly published 22 January 2024 by a consortium of preeminent radiology organisations. The American College of Radiology (ACR), Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR), European Society of Radiology (ESR), Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR), and Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) united their efforts to offer critical insights into the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the field of radiology. This paper was made available through the ESR’s online gold open access journal, Insights into Imaging.
The publication explores the dual role of AI in revolutionising healthcare while also addressing the urgent need for rigorous assessment to identify AI tools that are both safe and effective. It highlights the importance of ongoing monitoring of AI’s utility and safety, urging a joint effort among developers, medical professionals, and regulatory bodies to navigate the ethical dimensions and promote responsible AI integration in radiological practices. The paper also serves as a valuable guide for stakeholders, presenting advice on how to evaluate the stability, safety, and autonomous capabilities of AI tools in radiology.
