The TMC Radiology Quality Award has been launched by Telemedicine Clinic, Europe’s leading teleradiology company. Promoting quality initiatives within European radiology by way of a €10,000 prize, the first TMC award ceremony will take place in Vienna at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR), March 6–10, 2014.

Medical imaging is distancing itself from the past when all that came up from the radiology department in the basement of the hospital was a two-dimensional x-ray. These days, referring clinicians are offered access to advanced ways of diagnosing disease thanks to new methods and faster scanners, with a clear result of improved benefits for patients.

The increased complexity brings with it the need for efficient quality control solutions. Quality assurance systems and processes completion has not always kept up with the swift developments within radiology, frequently resulting in less than ideal use of medical imaging or even causing risks for patients.

It is challenging to achieve efficient quality assurance solutions, in part because it frequently requires changes in human behaviour. Successful initiatives often need strong leadership, high commitment and interdisciplinary project teams.

Telemedicine Clinic was founded a decade ago on the idea of bringing subspecialist radiology competence to all European patients, regardless of their location. It has been providing teleradiology services to more than 100 hospitals in Scandinavia, UK and Spain since then and will imminently be featured in German hospitals too.

Dr. Hans Billing is Telemedicine Clinic’s Medical Director and he sees the TMC Radiology Quality Award as a natural step in the company´s mission to increase radiology quality across countries. Telemedicine Clinic’s European experience with close to 100 radiology departments has given them the opportunity to come across a number of good examples of initiatives to improve quality. “We believes solid solutions for quality assurance and improvement within radiology are very important, and by introducing this unique award we hope to encourage more such initiatives,” he concludes.

The submission process for the 2014 TMC Radiology Quality Award opened on October 1 and closes on December 30. An international jury will review the submitted applications and the winner will be invited to the award ceremony in March at the ECR in Vienna.
