Imaging the colon could be as simple as swallowing a capsule in future. Israeli company Check-Cap Ltd. has announced proof of concept of its Check-Cap imaging system. The system consists of an ingestible capsule and proprietary ultra-low-dose X-ray based technology.
The Check-Cap imaging system works by swallowing a capsule, which transmits colon section measurements via a radio frequency link to a data recorder. As the capsule advances through the body it captures data reflecting the colon's internal surface with the aid of a contrast agent before being passed naturally in 2-3 days. The process has no effect on patients' normal routine.
The system is intended to have applications for screening for colorectal cancer and pre-cancerous polyps. The company says it is the first high-resolution system that does not require bowel preparation. Following its clinical study in Israel, it plans to launch a study in Europe with a view to submitting a request for CE marking in 2014, and seek regulatory approval in the U.S., China and Japan.
