We are proud to announce that, as of 1 October 2020, the European Society of Anaesthesiology will officially become the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care.

The ESAIC has a proven record of intensive care medicine as a part of our activities, education, examination and research, and it is a significant speciality in our community. However, this was not reflected in our society name. The addition of intensive care to the name of our society is imperative, now more than ever, as we work together to end the COVID-19 pandemic and to unite our global community. Thus the decision to alter our society name was met by full support from our leadership, council, and members.

The ESAIC should, and will continue to, accurately represent our full community of health care professionals working together in the fields of anaesthesiology, intensive care, perioperative, emergency and pain medicine to raise the standards of the profession and patient safety.

We thank you for your support and dedication to your profession as we work together to create a better future.
