Evangelos J. Giamarellos-Bourboulis is a Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. He was trained in the Immunology of Infections at the Department of Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease of Radboud University in the Netherlands. In 2012 and 2013, he served as a guest professor of the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Jena University Hospital in Germany. 

 

His main research contribution is immunomodulation in sepsis and auto-inflammatory disorders, for which the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases awarded him the Young Investigator Research Award. He has 446 publications in international peer-reviewed journals with 21,700 citations. 

 

Prof Giamarellos-Bourboulis has contributed to the development of clarithromycin for the immunomodulatory treatment of septic shock, the recognition of hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) as an auto-inflammatory disorder, and in the licensing of adalimumab for the treatment of (HS). He is also the coordinator of the Hellenic Sepsis Study Group.
