Liver biopsies are a common specimen in most surgical pathology practices. Liver biopsy interpretation is challenging because many liver diseases manifest overlapping histological features.
A systematic pattern-based approach facilitates identification of subtle features that help to narrow the differential diagnoses, correlate findings with clinical data, and provide a meaningful report.
This interactive microscopy course allows independent examination of a teaching set of glass slides followed by discussion around a multi-headed scope, thus filling a knowledge gap that is not covered by didactic lectures or textbooks.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
- Recognize hepatic, lobular, biliary and vascular patterns of liver injury, and use histological clues and clinical data to formulate a meaningful diagnosis.
- Diagnose hepatocellular, biliary and mesenchymal liver tumors, and differentiate between benign and malignant lesions as well as their mimics.
- Diagnose common post-transplant pathologies in allograft biopsies.
- Recognize subtle histological findings in liver biopsies that appear to be near normal.
