Accurate, early diagnosis of VTE is essential to prevent complications and consequences. Missing diagnosis can leading to potentially fatal PE due to lack of treatment. False positive diagnosis leads to unnecessary anticoagulant treatment (risk of fatal bleeding) and unnecessary imaging may be prescribed. Pertinent diagnostic information is necessary to help save more lives, increase patient comfort and lower costs. Combining PTP assessment and VIDAS D-Dimer Exclusion II has been found to be the most effective means of excluding VTE in intermediate and low risk groups. Imaging and treatment is therefore only prescribed for those patients testing positive.
