The EMS Swiss Lithobreaker is a cordless, portable device suitable for use in extended lithotripsy sessions. The straight working channel of this device is compatible with those of the more commonly used cystoscopes, nephorscopes, and ureteroscopes. The Swiss Lithobreaker is primarily intended for breaking up deposits of ureteric calculi. The power pack, situated in the handle of the device, consists of 4 rechargeable NiL AAA batteries. The housing also contains the unit's motor and gear drive. This electrical powered unit can deliver up to 3,000 energy impulses, more than 30 times that of a conventional gas-powered unit. The unit can be operated in either a single or continuous impulse mode. Both the probe guide and the probe cap can be sterilized between uses by plasma or steam techniques.
