The Open Source Electronic Health Record Alliance (OSEHRA), a non-profit organisation dedicated to accelerating innovation in electronic health record software and related technology, has been invited to host a special session at the 2014 Healthcare Information and Management Society (HIMSS) Annual Conference and Exhibition on Sunday, February 23, 2014, in Orlando, Florida.

The session, entitled Open Innovation in Electronic Health Records, will feature user-driven innovations as well as a set of strategic briefings from the Department of Veterans Affairs on current open source practices and the future of the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA).

More than 37,000 healthcare IT professionals, clinicians, executives, and vendors from around the world are expected to participate in the HIMSS conference.

“We are enthusiastic about engaging this community, especially with this type of unique session covering both user innovations and VistA Evolution,” said Dr. Seong K. Mun, CEO of OSEHRA.

The session will feature success stories from member organisations that utilise VistA, one of the most widely used electronic health record systems in the world. Leading implementers and innovators such as Lutheran Medical Center, the North Carolina Department of Health, Oroville Hospital, and the College of St. Scholastica will share their experience and strategies together with key corporate members.

The three winners of the VA’s Medical Appointment Scheduling (MASS) Contest will participate in a panel to discuss how innovations occur in the open source environment. A report from VA on the status of VistA Evolution and open source code intake will highlight unprecedented collaboration among OSEHRA, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), and the Indian Health Service (IHS).

“We are particularly excited and honored that key leaders of the open source community such as Dr. Howard Hays, Chief Information Officer at IHS, and Christine Rhodes, Director of Open Source Management for VHA, are featured speakers at our session,” remarked Dr. Mun.

OSEHRA is also proud to be a first-time exhibitor at the HIMSS conference. From February 24- 26, significant achievements will be showcased at Booth 682. Attendees will learn of the successes, challenges, and lessons gained from the institutionalisation of VistA within VA, the support of the national private sector market, and the international implementations of VistA by the United Kingdom, India, and Jordan.
