Walborn suffered from a heart condition called pulmonary valve stenosis, which reduces blood flow to the lungs. The solution, a valvuloplasty to widen the valve and increase blood flow, used a MRI scanner instead of the series of x-rays. The use of the MRI shows a clearer image in real-time during the surgery without the risk of radiation.

Radiation from x-rays has the potential of causing cancer later on. Scientists say, 1 in every 2000 adults develop cancer from x-rays and 1 in every 1000 children. While the chances to develop cancer from x-rays are small, over entire populations results could be substantial.
