Heather Meissen is a surgical critical care nurse practitioner at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia and is the founding Co-Director of the APP Critical Care Fellowship Program. Additionally, she has served as faculty at the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University.

 

She received her Master of Science in Nursing and Doctorate of Nursing Practice, focusing on Healthcare Leadership and Nursing Education from Vanderbilt University. Her research interests focus on nurse practitioner workforce development, which includes onboarding, training, retention and burnout. She also has a special interest in critical care staffing models that incorporate the full scope of practice nurse practitioners.

 

Heather is actively involved in many national organisations including the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the Association of Post Graduate APRN programmes. She has received fellowship designations in the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

 

Heather has held many leadership positions within these national organisations. Heather was a founding executive board member and first president of the Association of Post Graduate APRN programmes. Leadership roles within the Society of Critical Care Medicine have included Co-Chair for Program Planning, Chair of the Graduate Resident Education Committee, Member at Large for the Nursing Section Steering Committee and Chair of Communications for the Nursing Section.
