Trauma is a major public health problem. It is the leading cause of death of patients between the ages of 1 and 44 years. Approximately 80% of trauma deaths are of a central nervous system injury, haemorrhage, or a combination of the two. An optimal management of these patients requires a multi-disciplinary approach, associated with a rigorous strategy.
The conference will focus on the key steps of the
management of trauma patients during the first 24 hours
and in the ICU. The scientific programme will include talks
from internationally renowned experts in this field.
Learning Objectives
Through this conference, ESICM along with Sociedade Portuguesa Cuidados Intensivos (SPCI) aims to:
- review the latest scientific evidence and most recent developments in the field of critical care for trauma patients.
- evaluate critical care aspects of trauma management in the acute (pre-hospital, emergency department, intensive care unit) and sub-acute (early rehabilitation) setting.
- assess the epidemiology and disease burden of trauma.
- consider novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to detect and control haemorrhage in trauma patients.
- determine optimal strategies for resuscitation of traumatic haemorrhagic shock.
- discuss critical care challenges in different types of trauma (e.g. brain, chest, major vascular, spinal cord injury, etc.).
- evaluate the therapeutic challenges of specific trauma populations for the intensivist.
- understand the pathophysiology of trauma-associated organ dysfunction and immune response.
- discuss ways of outcome prediction in severely traumatised patients.
- explore ethical aspects of providing critical care for the most severely injured patients.
