Cordis Corporation has announced the appointment of Joseph M. Smith, M.D., Ph.D. to Vice President, Microelectronic Technologies. Dr. Smith will lead the company’s efforts to develop implantable microelectronic technologies in the management of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Smith brings more than 25 years experience in cardiac rhythm management (CRM) to Cordis Corporation. Most recently, he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of the CRM business at Guidant (later Boston Scientific). Prior to his corporate positions, Dr. Smith founded and served as Director of The Arrhythmia Institute, a private clinical and research organisation in clinical cardiac electrophysiology located in Fairfax, Virginia. He also led a research programme in biomedical signal processing and served as associate director of the clinical and teaching programme in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
