We design and manufacture our own, tailor-made equipment that enables us to produce close to one million products a day at our three production sites in Ballaigues, Switzerland. It was in 1889 that Auguste Maillefer, dentist and former watchmaker, began manufacturing his own instruments to better suit his needs and the needs of his colleagues, which marked the starting point to set a higher standard of care for patients. He was inspired due to a rather quick realization that the instruments that were being used at the time were not being created with an actual understanding of dentistry. By combining his technical expertise and clinical experience, he was able to be one step ahead of other producers by designing highly innovative and technologically advanced instruments, for both himself and his colleagues.
Today at Dentsply Maillefer, we continue to incorporate Auguste Maillefer’s expertise in everything we do. Since the first canal exploration in 1889, Auguste Maillefer has molded our knowledge and continues to inspire how we think about endodontic solutions.

The term endodontics originates from the Greek word, Endo “inside” and odons “tooth”. The area of the tooth concerned is the pulp and the tissues surrounding the root.
Endodontic treatment becomes necessary when the pulp of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected. This can occur as a result of deep decay, repeated dental procedures, crack or chip, or an injury/accident. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain and/or lead to an abscess.

Throughout the years, we have made it our priority to design state-of-the-art instruments to perform endodontic solutions. Our team is composed of approximately 900 employees working across a wide spectrum of 120 different fields of expertise, ranging from engineering to global sales and marketing, to ensure that the utmost standard of quality is achieved and commercialized worldwide.
Each step of the manufacturing process is carefully monitored and improved on a daily basis to continuously achieve better outcomes. Quality and precision are not our only values. Since 1975, we have been using recycled heat to filter oil in an effort to foster a more sustainable production. This exemplifies not only our commitment to adopting durable and sustainable systems, but also our concern to preserve the environment. Each manufacturing stage that creates a PROTAPER NEXT® file utilizes a different skill set. This means that, for every operation, there are approximately 10 different fields of expertise working together to create the best possible product. Each year we launch 2-3 products, which are entirely conceived on site, from the original design to the final product.
In order to keep the production process of dental instruments on site, Dentsply Maillefer has its own engineering team that develops customized machines. The team is composed of 40 employees, which includes highly experienced engineers that build sophisticated production systems with in-line quality control. These machines are significantly more advanced than the others that are available on the market, due to the fact that they are designed specifically for the production of dental instruments. With
its own machine production, the manufacturing process know-how stays in house. The result? A competitive advantage for Dentsply Maillefer’s customers.
