Support stockings are often assumed to be similar to compression stockings or elastic stockings. Support stockings differ from compression stockings in so many ways. Support stockings are intended to prevent venous complaints. In contrast to compression stockings, these products do not produce a defined pressure distribution, and these are not classified into compression classes. Consequently, these are not a medical aid and are not prescribed by a physician. Support stockings however provide relief for minor complaints, for example, heavy legs or water retention in the tissues. These are available over the counter in retail stores, drugstores and medical supply stores.
