Our Smart Vest was developed to measure key lung functions parameters in a non invasive way. All the captured parameters are relevant to the management of preterm babies in the neonatal ward. Tidal breathing is measured using a vest, without interfering with the airways as can occur with methods such as pneumotachography. The VoluSense device translates volume changes of the vest to breathing measures: - Tidal flow - Tidal volume - Respiration frequency - Minute volume - Thoraco-abdominal asynchrony Each breathing cycle is easily visualized and quantified on the screen. VoluSense tidal breathing graphs and data resemble those provided for invasive ventilator systems for neonatal patients but without interference from secretions, endotracheal tube leaks, dead-space or resistance, etc. The vests are produced as comfortable wrap arounds at sizes suitable for any neonatal patient. The procedure takes about 5-10 minutes. A baby can be monitored for longer periods if desirable. The vest design allows rapid access to the baby as needed. The principles for the device are based on electromagnetic changes generated by volume changes generated in multiple segments of the vest. The reliability of the VoluSense device has been tested in clinical studies. We are planning the introduction of a new device tailored to neonates in hospital care.
