Advantages of the C1-C2 plating with the Fork Cervical Plate (FCP) › It is more stable than the transarticular screws designed by Magerl. › It allows three different types of plate work: · C1 screwed bend fitting/C2-C1 · transarticular screw fitting, · C1 screwed bend fitting/C2 · massa lateralis screw fitting, · C1 screwed bend fitting/C2 · pedicle screw fitting. › In contrast to the Gallie technique, where the ligamentum interspinatum has to be sacrificed by the wire cerclage, the ligamentum interspinatum remains intact. › It saves using a sublaminar wire cerclage, which can cause bleeding and complications. › In the case of a recent “hangman’s fracture”, it provides an adequate temporary method of stabilisation, which spares the joints, for the C1-C2 segment. In this case the plating is used as a C1 bend/massa lateralis construct. › Due to the adequate stability, a post-operative neck collar is hardly required after C1-C2 plating.
