This a full time Clinical Research Fellow Post (ST3+ Equivalent) in response to research and service needs. This is a fixed term post for 12 months with the possibility of extension if satisfactory progression is met.

The Thoracic surgical unit provides a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic services (excluding pulmonary transplantation) for adults and on some occasions children and to a population of approximately 1.5 million within Norfolk and North Suffolk. In addition to a large programme of lung, pleural and mediastinal surgery (open, thoracoscopic and robotic) the department undertakes a small amount of ENT surgery in conjunction with the ENT Surgeons (for example retrosternal extension of goiter). Over the last few years, total departmental throughput has equated to approximately 600 major procedures annually, which includes over 200 major lung resections for lung cancer. In addition to this elective work, all thoracic trauma is admitted to the thoracic surgical unit with active rib fixation programme.

Out-patient clinics are held weekly at NNUH, Kings Lynn (The Queen Elizabeth Hospital), Yarmouth (James Paget Hospital) and Ipswich. Multidisciplinary meetings for lung cancer are held weekly at all of these hospitals. Face to face service to satellite hospitals is provided by consultants only. All surgical procedures are carried out at NNUH.

The appointee will work at the registrar level. Daily activities will concentrate around developing of prospective thoracic database, retrospective review studies, audits, service evaluation and literature reviews. Apart from academic activities, there will be at least one day in the week for clinical provision with varied commitments, including some of ward work (pre- and post-operative care of thoracic surgical patients), attendance in theatre, attendance to multi-disciplinary meetings for lung cancer. The successful appointee will also contribute to 1:4 non residential on call rota with appropriate additional salary uplift.

The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals.
