Who should attend?

This course is designed for physicians who are either beginning their IR career, or who would like to refresh or broaden their existing portfolios to include venous access and dialysis management.

What will you learn?

The course will cover:
• the physiology of the venous system and anatomical considerations relevant to venous access
• live cases to gain an understanding of IR techniques
• insertion of temporary and tunneled lines and treatment of venous, arterial and anastomotic stenosis
• the anatomical considerations, physiology and techniques relevant to haemodialysis fistulae
• interactive case discussion to further reflect on the course material

Venous access – anatomy, physiology
• Know the venous anatomy
• Understand the physiology of venous endothelium and the interaction between venous catheters and the venous circulation and heart
HoS Hands-on Sessions
• Insertion of temporary and tunnelled lines via the jugular, subclavian and femoral approaches
• Placement of arm and chest wall ports
Interactive Case Discussion
Dialysis – anatomy, physiology, techniques
• Anatomy relevant to haemodialysis fistulae
• Patho-physiology of arteriovenous access failure including failure of maturation of fistula, central venous stenosis, aneurysms and steal phenomena
• Indications and contra indications for the various techniques for intervention in failing dialysis access

Discussion
• Treatment of venous, arterial and anastomotic stenoses and occlusions related to fistulae including angioplasty, cutting balloon angioplasty, stenting, stentgrafting, thrombolysis, thrombosuction
