Dr Gregor Smith has been appointed Scotland's interim Chief Medical Officer following the resignation of Dr Catherine Calderwood on 5 April.
Dr Calderwood has resigned after making two
trips to her second home during the coronavirus lockdown. She had apologised
for her actions, and initially said she planned to continue in the role, but
later released a statement
saying she had quit.
Dr Smith was acting as deputy Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, since 2015.
Prior to this he served as a senior medical officer in the Scottish Government
and medical director for primary care in NHS Lanarkshire where he spent most of
his clinical career as a GP in Larkhall.
He is an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Glasgow
and Fellow of both the Scottish Patient Safety Programme and Salzburg Global.
