It is a great privilege and honour to be Convenor of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists’ 2018 National Scientific Congress in Adelaide, which promises to be a truly memorable event. I am supported by an enthusiastic and hard-working Convening Committee that is putting together a program, both exciting and fulfilling.

The recently upgraded Adelaide Convention Centre (ACC), one of the foremost Convention Centres in Australia will be hosting the NSC in 2018. Plenaries, refreshers and concurrent sessions will be held in the East complex and the wide range of workshops and small group discussions will take place in the Riverbank rooms in the West complex. At the core of the meeting is the Exhibition Hall, located in the Central complex, making it an ideal location for social and networking opportunities. Additionally, the ACC sits centrally on the South bank of the

Torrens River, providing majestic views over the new Adelaide Oval. A short hop along North Terrace will take you to the Medical and Research hub of Adelaide, including the most advanced hospital in Australia –the new Royal Adelaide Hospital. The ACC is also ideally situated to make the most of the fine dining and café lifestyle so beloved of Australians. To put this into perspective, there are more small bars and hotel beds within five minutes of the ACC than there are at any other conference destination in Australia.

Our social program team, are putting together an agenda that will have something for everyone. New for 2018 is a change in the scheduling of the Gala Dinner to allow more delegates the opportunity to attend. We will be wined and dined in the fabulous William Magarey Room at the Adelaide Oval, with views both north over the Oval and south over the Torrens. The trademark Industry Reception will be held on Sunday and a Family night at the Adelaide Zoo on the Monday evening.

So much for the location and the social aspect of the program, what about the science? We are delighted to introduce three leading international experts in Professor Joyce Wahr from Minnesota, Associate Professor Duminda Wijeysundera from Toronto and Professor Lars Eriksson from Stockholm. Our Australasian Visitor is Professor of Clinical Neuroscience, Lorimer Moseley, from the University of South Australia, who recently completed the 870km “Pain Revolution Cycle Tour” from Melbourne to Adelaide, conducting seminars along the way.

We are delighted that Air Vice-Marshall Tracy Smart, Surgeon General of the Australian Defence Force, will deliver the Kester Brown Lecture, fitting that the NSC will be held nearly 100 years since the signing of the Armistice that heralded the end of The Great War, on November 11 1918.
