The Expo enables you to get a first-hand look at the latest technologies from some 200 equipment manufacturers and service providers from across the nation and around the world.

And it all takes place in Philadelphia, the home of Benjamin Franklin, the Declaration of Independence, and the Philly cheesesteak sandwich.

How HTMs Can Serve as Their Facilities’ Risk Managers
Saturday, May 31: 12:00 p.m.–1:15 p.m.

Richard Boothman

Richard Boothman, JD

Executive Director for Clinical Safety, Chief Risk Officer, University of Michigan Health System

As chief risk officer at the University of Michigan Health System, Richard Boothman has implemented a proactive and principled approach to patient injuries caused by medical errors. The university’s open and honest approach to patient injuries, patient safety, and claims has drawn national attention, and been featured by NPR, The New England Journal of Medicine, CBS News,The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and many others. In 2005, he advised then Senators Clinton and Obama on the formulation and introduction of their National Medical Error Disclosure and Compensation Act (MEDiC).

In this talk, Boothman will explore healthcare technology management professionals’ (HTMs) role in the mission of improving patient safety and why they should consider themselves an integral part of any effort to improve healthcare safety and quality—with all the responsibilities to speak up that such a role implies. He will explain the pivotal place transparency has across the healthcare landscape and how it fuels a culture in which patient-centeredness becomes a major imperative in every aspect of healthcare delivery. In the complex world of healthcare delivery, complete with its financial pressures and competing priorities, medical technology is growing in every segment, so Boothman will challenge HTMs to see themselves differently.

Dwight E. Harken Memorial Lecture and AAMI Awards Luncheon

A Hospital’s Response to the Boston Marathon Bombing

Sunday, June 1: 11:15 a.m.–12:45 p.m.

Alasdair K. Conn, MD

Medical Director, In-Patient Access and Transfer Center Chief (Emeritus),
Emergency Medicine
, Massachusetts General Hospital

Ann L. Prestipino
Senior Vice President, Surgical and Anesthesia Services and Clinical Business Development
Massachusetts General Hospital

During the Boston Marathon in 2013, two bombs exploded, killing three people and injuring 264 others. To care for the victims, Massachusetts General Hospital put into action a comprehensive plan that placed the entire hospital in disaster-response mode. Alasdair Conn and Ann Prestipino were active participants in the implementation of the emergency plan.

In this presentation, Conn and Prestipino will share the details of the Boston city-wide disaster-response plan that led to the successful response to the bombing. Their story will challenge you to think deeply about planning, the role of multi-disciplinary teamwork, the role of technology, how other cities (and their healthcare delivery teams) might emulate what worked in Boston, and creating a culture of continuous team learning.
The lecture will take place during the AAMI Awards Luncheon, where you also can enjoy lunch with your colleagues and honor the achievements of your peers. The event honors Dwight Harken’s substantial contributions to medical science & technology.

General Session
Bringing Critical Backstage Work to Center Stage:
Explaining What It Takes to Deliver High Quality Healthcare
Monday, June 2: 8:30 a.m.–10:15 a.m.

Suzanne Gordon

Suzanne Gordon
Journalist / Author / Patient Safety Advocate

When patients—and even some healthcare professionals—see the equipment in high tech hospitals, they generally think of the doctors, nurses, or clinical technicians. But very few members of the public or healthcare profession fully appreciate that—for patients to be safe— it takes expert skill and knowledge to make sure the equipment they depend upon for tests, treatments, and procedures is safe. This interactive lecture and workshop will explore and explain the critical role of those who maintain, manage, repair, help purchase, and always help educate others about medical equipment. It will teach you how to explain your work to a broader public, so that people can understand the “village” that works together to make patients safe. The session will include a photo montage of work done by members of AAMI, some individual stories about that work, and interactive storytelling that will help illuminate the importance of this critical profession.

Suzanne Gordon is an award winning journalist and author who writes about healthcare delivery, healthcare systems, and patient safety. Her 15 books include, First Do Less Harm: Confronting Inconvenient Problems in Patient Safety. Her articles have appeared in The Atlantic, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, JAMA,The Annals of Internal Medicine, and many others.
