Prof. Nevra Elmas is  a specialist in abdominal and gastrointestinal radiology and professor at Ege University in Izmir, Turkey. Her main clinical expertise lies in cross-sectional abdominal imaging with an emphasis on MRI and CT. Dr.Elmas’ primary research interests are diagnostic radiology of pancreatic and hepatic diseases also kidney, gastrointestinal tract and peritoneum. To find out more, we asked Prof. Elmas 7 questions:

1. What are your key areas of interest and research?
Abdominal radiology (diagnostic)-especially pancreas.

2. What are the major challenges in your field?
Changes and difficulties of standardisation of abdominal imaging with fast techniqual progression.

3. What is your top management tip? 
My principles and my advice for management  comprise 3 points, namely being transparent, fair and peaceful. 

4. What would you single out as a career highlight? 
Being the true and reliable personality.

5. If you had not chosen this career path you would have become a ….?
I would have become an architect or chemist.

6. What are your personal interests outside of work?
I have a lot of personal interests outside of work. 
These  are:
-Travelling all around the world to see cultural heritage, 
-Related to travelling, nature and human photography,
-Trekking and hiking, 
-Reading  novels,
-Listening to music, and 
-Solving puzzles….

7. Your favourite quote?
I have two favourite quotes. One of them is:
“Life isn’t about finding yourself, Life is about creating yourself.”
The other is: 
“When it rains look for rainbows, when it’s dark look for stars…”


Prof. Elmas graduated in medicine from Ege University, and completed her postgraduate training at the radiology department of the same university in 1986. She became assistant professor in 1987, associate professor in 1989 and professor in 1997. She worked as a visiting fellow in the Gastrointestinal Radiology and Body MR Departments of the University of Pennsylvania for a 6 months period during 1994 and 1995.

Prof. Elmas has been actively involved in the radiology profession in Turkey and at the European level. She was an executive committee member of the Turkish Society of Radiology from 2002 to 2006 and President between 2011 and 2013. In addition she has been the national representative member of Turkey in ESGAR between 1995 and 2006 and again in 2012, and president of the Abdominal Radiology Working Group of Turkish Society of Radiology between 2008 and 2011. She has been subcommittee member of the Law Committee of ESGAR since 2011. She worked as a reviewer in UEGW (United European Gastrointestinal Week) at 2004 and 2005. She has been elected as a President of Radiology Department at Ege University Medical School since 2011. 

She was Editorial Board Member of IMAGING Management, holds currently an Editorial Board Membership of the Imaging Section within HealthManagement.org Journal, is a reviewer for European Radiology, European Journal of Radiology, Diagnostic & Interventional Radiology and many national journals.  She has contributed to over 100 publications in referred international and national journals and over 200 oral & poster presentations in international and international congress. Dr. Elmas has also authored review articles and textbook chapters.
