As a leader in women’s health, Hologic knows that increasing access to breast cancer screening is critical to detecting cancer earlier and saving lives.

We commend the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) for changing their draft guidelines to recommend that women begin screening at age 40. Lowering the age for initial screening to 40 is critical as approximately 60,000 breast cancers are diagnosed each year in women under 50. Further, Black women are more likely to develop aggressive cancers at younger ages than white women - and are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women.

The draft guidelines issued today are a significant step forward for women, narrowing the gap between USPSTF guidelines and those of leading professional societies and current clinical best practices. Hologic is committed to working with the Task Force and others in the breast cancer community in support of final guidelines that promote early detection, improve treatment options and reduce health inequities.
