Prof. Tienush Rassaf took up his appointment as Editor-in-Chief, Cardiology, HealthManagement.org in September 2016.

Prof. Rassaf has since August 2015 been Department Head and Chair of Cardiology (Cardiology and Vascular Medicine from August 2016) at the Westgerman Heart- and Vascular Center at the University of Essen, Germany.  

He was born in Cologne, Germany, and studied medicine at the University of Düsseldorf and the University of Texas, Houston. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Düsseldorf and Louisiana State University and completed residencies at the University Düsseldorf and the University Hospital Aachen. From 2005 until 2008 he was Leader of the CardioBioTech Research group of the Department of Cardiology, University Hospital Aachen, Germany, and from 2010 until 2015 he was W2 Heisenberg professor for Myocardial Infarction of the German Research Foundation at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf and Teaching Coordinator of the Department of Cardiology, University Hospital Düsseldorf. From 2013 until 2015 he was Vice-director of the Department of Cardiology University Düsseldorf. He is Board-certified in Cardiology, Emergency Medicine and Angiology. He became a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology in 2009.

1. What are your key areas of interest and research?
I am interested in elucidating mechanisms in myocardial infarction/ischaemia-reperfusion injury and cardioprotection. My main clinical focus is the interventional therapy of valve diseases and complex coronary interventions.

2. What are the major challenges in your field?
To be an excellent clinician, a curious scientist, a good manager, a wise leader and after all a good guy…all in one!

3. What is your top management tip?
Talk to your people.

4. What would you single out as a career highlight?
Becoming Chair of Cardiology at the Westgerman Heart- and Vascular Center at the University of Essen, Germany in August 2015.

5. If you had not chosen this career path you would have become a…? 
Lawyer…or a full-time dad in order to spend more time with my daughters.

6. What are your personal interests outside of work? 
My lovely wife and my two wonderful daughters (3 and 1.5 yo), reading biographies.
