Jean-Francois Pittet, MD, will be succeeding Steven L. Shafer, MD as Editor-in-Chief of Anesthesia & Analgesia (A&A), the flagship journal of the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS). He will take over the position when Dr. Shafer's term expires in March 2016.
Dr. Pittet is an educator and researcher in the fields of critical care, trauma and perioperative medicine. A&A is the oldest journal in the specialty of anaesthesiology and Dr. Pittet will set a distinct tone and editorial direction of this 93-year-old journal when he takes the position. Dr. Pittet will continue to be based in Birmingham, Alabama and will work with the IARS staff in San Francisco, California.
Denise J. Wedel, MD, Chair of the IARS Board of Trustees is delighted to have Dr. Pittet on board as the new Editor-in-Chief and is confident that Dr. Pittet will continue Dr. Shafer's legacy of creativity and innovation and will expand the journalís content coverage into new areas.
Dr. Pittet graduated from the School of Medicine of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland in 1977. He completed his postgraduate training in anaesthesia and critical care medicine in Switzerland and worked as a clinician-scientist at the Universities of Lausanne and Geneva. He joined the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of California, San Francisco in 1990 and the UCSF Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine in 1992. He worked for 18 years as an anaesthesiologist and intensivist at San Francisco General Hospital. He was then recruited to the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Alabama where he holds the title of David H. Chestnut Professor of Anesthesiology and Vice Chair/Director of the Division of Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine.
Dr. Pittet has served as a visiting professor at several North American and European universities including University of Nice-Sophia Antipolis, France. Dr. Pittet's research is focused on the mechanisms of acute lung injury after sepsis and trauma and posttraumatic coagulopathy and is supported by the National Institute of Health and the Department of Defense.
Dr. Pittet has published 80 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 59 articles, 30 review articles and 20 book chapters. He has received several awards and honours including the 3rd Award Swiss Society of Surgery, the 2nd Award at the 3rd International Steglitzer Symposium, 1st Award Swiss Society of Critical Care Medicine and the Prospective Award International Anesthesia Trauma and Critical Care Society. He was elected to the American Thoracic Society and the American Physiological Society in 1994.
