Prof. Jean-Charles Preiser is an intensivist at Erasme University Hospital in Brussels, Belgium and Professor of physiopathology in the School of Dietetics, HELB, Brussels.

We asked Prof. Preiser our 7 questions:

1. What are your key areas of interest and research?
I am especially interested in the metabolic aspects of critical illness, and its consequences in terms of nutritional needs, hyperglycaemia and long-term outcomes.

2. What are the major challenges in your field?
To translate knowledge into daily clinical practice.

3. What is your top management tip?
To be available for discussion and to encourage exchanges of views.

4. What would you single out as a career highlight?
The performance of a multiple-centre study, which gathered several categories of healthcare providers on a common concern.

5. If you had not chosen this career path you would have become a…?
Film director.

6. What are your personal interests outside of work?
Cinema, re-inventing the world with my best friends.

7. Your favourite quote?
I don't want to achieve immortality through my work... I want to achieve it through not dying. (Woody Allen)

Prof. Preiser is Chairman of the Belgian Society of Clinical Nutrition (Société Belge de Nutrition Clinique) and past chairman of the Metabolism endocrinology, nephrology and nutrition section of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine.

He serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Enteral and Parenteral NutritionCritical Care and Annals of Intensive Care, and is a reviewer for Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Critical Care, Clinical Nutrition, Nutrition, Critical Care and Shock, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and Physiological Research. He is a member of several scientific societies of intensive care medicine and nutrition, and serves as vice-president of the French-speaking Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (Société Francophone Nutrition Clinique et Métabolisme). He has presented 150 lectures  at  international scientific congress, and published 168 original articles  in national and international journals as well as 100 abstracts.
