Professor Clive Kay is Chief Executive of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the UK. He joined the Trust in 1998 as a Consultant Radiologist. He was appointed Medical Director in 2006, became the Responsible Officer for the Foundation Trust in 2011, was appointed Deputy Chief Executive in 2013 and Interim Chief Executive in September 2014. He joined HealthManagement's Editorial Board in 2014.
We put our 7 questions to Prof. Kay:
1. What are your key areas of interest and research?
My key areas of interest increasingly relate to the delivery of new models of healthcare within the NHS, which will both result in quality improvement and be at the same time financially sustainable.
As a gastrointestinal radiologist, I have been active in research relating to the techniques and outcomes associated with gastrointestinal disease. Such research has included the application of new imaging techniques to current clinical practice – including such techniques as CT colonography, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography, and stenting of the gastrointestinal tract.
2. What are the major challenges in your field?
As the newly appointed Chief Executive of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, my major challenge is to balance the quality of the clinical services we provide to patients, whilst continuing to deliver the highest levels of performance, all at the same time as meeting the ever increasingly difficult financial challenge.
3. What is your top management tip?
Lead by example, and empower your staff to deliver.
4. What would you single out as a career highlight?
Being recently appointed to the position of Chief Executive of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – having commenced my career here in 1998 as a Consultant Radiologist, and then subsequently becoming Clinical Director and then Medical Director.
5. If you had not chosen this career path you would have become a…?
Grave disappointment to my father!
6. What are your personal interests outside of work?
Sleep, wine, rugby union, sleep.
7. Your favourite quote?
"If you’re not living on the edge – you’re taking up too much room"
Before working in Bradford, Prof. Kay spent three years at the Medical University of South Carolina as Chief of Radiological Services at the Digestive Disease Centre. He was the Lead Clinician for the Western West Yorkshire Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Centre between 2001 and 2010.
He is an Advisory Editor: Gastrointestinal for Clinical Radiology, and is a past Chairman of the British Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology. For the Royal College of Radiologists he has served as an Elected Member of Council Chairman of the Scientific Programme Committee and Member of the Professional Support and Standards Board. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He is an Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Bradford.
