Prof. Bertrand Guidet, a distinguished French intensive care physician, is the director of the Medical Intensive Care at the Hôpital Saint Antoine in Paris, France, and medical director of the academic hospitals located in East Paris.

We asked Prof. Guidet our 7 questions.

1. What are your key areas of interest and research?
How to improve performance of ICUs - this interest translates into research on specific populations, such as elderly or homeless patients. Also on specific procedures such as medication errors.

2. What are the major challenges in your field?
Work on culture and climate in ICUs. Communication skills, Handover, team –building… The outcome improvement for the patients admitted in our units will come through managerial skills rather than new fancy equipment or magic algorithms.

3. What is your top management tip?

Think together .

4. What would you single out as a career highlight?
To build, step by step a team with personal accomplishment for each member. This is a continuous process; Never stop; Never look to the past.

5. If you had not chosen this career path you would have become a…?
Lawyer. To analyse the causes and motivation, the psychology of people in order to defend the case.

6. What are your personal interests outside of work?
Games: Go, chess, poker, including simple games with my grandchildren; Sport: ski-ing; golf and stupid jokes….

7. Your favourite quote?

Prof. Guidet gained his medical degree in 1985 and specialised in cardiology the following year. In 1987, he joined the Medical Intensive Care Board and received his diploma of advanced studies in renal physiology and pathophysiology. In 1993 he gained the necessary qualifications to perform research direction. He has been a university medical professor since 1997.
 
Prof. Guidet is a member of  the research unit INSERM U7U7 at the National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM), the French public organisation entirely dedicated to biological, medical and public health research.

He is past President (2008 – 2010) of the French Society for Intensive Care and is currently a member of the Health Research and Services outcome section of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM).  
He has written more than 200 articles published in international journals.
