Many workers fear that the growing adoption of artificial intelligence may force them out of their jobs. However, instead of destroying jobs, AI is generating new roles in many organisations that have embraced the technology, according to a survey report from consulting and outsourcing firm Capgemini.

The firm conducted a survey of 993 global executives between March and June of this year. Most of the executives polled (83 percent) said AI has generated new jobs in their organisations, with two in three jobs being created at the grade of manager or above.

Notably, among organisations that have implemented AI at scale, 63 percent said that AI has not destroyed any jobs in their organisation.

Along with the trend towards job creation at the management level, the report provides evidence that organisations see AI as a way to reduce the time employees spend on routine and administrative tasks, enabling them to deliver more value.

The majority of respondents (71 percent) have proactively initiated up-skilling/re-skilling of employees to take advantage of their AI investments. For those that have implemented AI at scale, a vast majority say they believe that AI will make complex jobs easier (89 percent) and that intelligent machines will coexist with humans within their businesses (88 percent).

“What we really want to do is to use humans to the best of their capabilities,” said Michael Natusch, global head of AI at insurer Prudential. “AI is taking away the time humans previously spent on repetitive issues and allowing them to focus on where human intelligence can drive value — for both themselves and for customers.”
