Hospitals, universities, research centres and leading companies in the health industry will play prominent roles in the 311 talks that will be given at HEALTHIO, the meeting point for the health sector which prioritizes citizens, set to be held in Pavilion 8 of the Montjuïc venue between 16 and 18 October. The topics to be discussed include the incorporation of innovative technologies such as AI (Artificial Intelligence) into healthcare, the application of predictive systems in the treatment of different illnesses, cooperation between doctors and patients in ailment management and the analysis of results.

One of the most interesting talks in the technology and health field will be given by Ignacio Hernández, a neurologist at the Ramón y Cajal Hospital and a founding partner of Savana and Mendelian, who will explain the innovations AI is bringing to the healthcare sector. This technology is permitting the development of tools capable of analysing large volumes of information to help doctors to improve their ability to offer diagnoses and treatments to their patients. Hernández will analyse the AI solutions already on offer in the market and the future opportunities its development will provide.

Another of the leading voices on the HEALTHIO schedule will be Eduardo Jorgensen, founder of MedicSen and winner of the MIT’s 2017 Spanish Innovator award, who will present the current predictive models for controlling diabetes to visitors. This system makes use of different algorithms to predict a patient’s future glucose levels and thus adapt the recommended therapy.

Dr Velasco Muñoz, a specialist in preventive medicine at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital, will discuss the vision of value-based healthcare. This involves a change in perspective with respect to the evidence-based classical system, proposing the application of high-quality and safe treatments with moderate costs and a negligible impact on the environment. It is a model which focuses on the long-term sustainability of the healthcare system and it is gaining support within the sector.

Nerea López, the medical coordinator of the AEEG (Spanish Association for Glycogen Storage Disease) will offer her testimony on how to run an association of patients with a minority disease and be a doctor with a professional point of view at the same time.

Innovation applied to health

Together with the schedule of talks, HEALTHIO will provide a showcase for the latest innovations and technological developments applied to healthcare. The fair will provide visitors with the chance to discover, try and test out the latest medical applications designed for prevention and patient treatments and cures.

The new products include adrenaline auto-injectors for the treatment of serious allergies, non-invasive ultrasound systems to count the white cells present in the blood and detect potential meningitis in babies, applications for women’s self-care and strengthening of the pelvic floor and AI software capable of interpreting real-time medical data and predicting new clinical episodes in patients.
