Education Program

The SNMMI 2014 Annual Meeting—the premier nuclear and molecular imaging event—provides physicians, technologists, pharmacists, laboratory professionals, and scientists an in-depth review of molecular imaging technologies, clinical applications, translational and advanced research topics.

The SNMMI Annual Meeting helps you increase your professional effectiveness as you learn to:
  • Examine and evaluate future directions in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging and therapy from a research and clinical perspective.

  • Describe the latest indications and applications of hybrid imaging and its impact on patient management.

  • Review standard, new and relevant advances in molecular imaging including applications in oncology, cardiology and neurology.

  • Discuss new therapeutic and diagnostic agents that are impacting the practice of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging.

  • Review radiation dose and image quality in medical imaging.

  • Identify clinical content that would be applicable to practice improvement.

Satellite Symposium and Virtual Meeting

PLEASE NOTE: this satellite symposium will take place at Eric P. Newman Education Center (EPNEC), Seminar Room B at the Washington University Medical School. Washington University is located approximately 5 miles from the St. Louis Convention Center.

Molecular Imaging: From Target to Translation - June 6

The workshop is comprised of three sessions with time allotted for panel discussion between sessions to stimulate interaction and discussion. The cyclotron facility at Washington University is currently undergoing renovations to house a newly installed cyclotron. We will present considerations in the design of a cyclotron facility as well as regulatory aspects for compliance with GMP standards to support clinical imaging research.

A session on nuclear imaging agents will follow with an emphasis on strategies and considerations in developing targeted imaging agents, in-vitro and in-vivo screening, and preclinical validation. Concepts will be reinforced with applications in cancer, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and pulmonary diseases. As preclinical imaging is central to translational imaging, we will compare the utility of preclinical imaging modalities, with particular emphasis on multi-modality MR and optical contrast agents and quantitative PET imaging.

The workshop will culminate with a session on clinical imaging. Topics to be presented include an overview of regulatory requirements in initiating clinical nuclear imaging research, considerations in integrating molecular imaging in clinical trials, and recent advances and opportunities in translational optical imaging.

Finally, as one of the early adopters of the Siemens Biograph mMR, we will present our experince with the simultaneous PET/MR scanner by highlighting applications initiated at the Center for Clinical Imaging Research (CCIR).

Preclinical PET/CT/Optical Imaging Practicum

This practicum will build on lessons learned for the workshop by providing hands-on experience in preclinical imaging techniques. Advanced animal handling techniques to maximize both qualitative and quantitative results will also be introduced. The practicum is separate from the didactic workshop with limited seating per session to maximize hands-on training.Attendees have the option to choose from a session time below. Each session accommodates up to 8 attendees.

June 5June 11

1st session: 9:30am-11:30am
2nd session: 3:00-5:00pm

1st Session 3:00pm-5:00pm

The practicum will demonstrate:

  • Preclinical PET scanner calibration
  • Animal handling techniques
  • Options in anesthesia and demonstrations
  • Catheterization (venous and femoral artery)
  • Rapid blood sampling techniques
  • Dose handling techniques to prepare the tracer injections for small animals
  • Various modes of injections for tracer and drug delivery
  • Tumor inoculation
  • PET/CT Imaging
  • Preliminary analysis
  • Animal dissection & bio-distribution (including analysis of data)
  • Data analysis

Once the mice have completed the PET/CT imaging portion of the practicum, they will be imaged on the IVIS Optical scanner. This system will be used to look at

  • Cerenkov imaging
  • Bioluminescence imaging
  • Fluorescence imaging
