According to the data collected by International Committee of the Red Cross, in 11 countries with an armed conflict (January 2012 and December 2014), over 50% of 2,400 incidents of violence against health care took place in the vicinity of, within, or had directly targeted health facilities. These data speak to the urgency of implementing measures to strengthen the security and preparedness of health facilities operating in insecure contexts.
Against this background, the purpose of the webinar is to present the Security Survey for health facilities, a diagnostic tool, developed under the framework of the Health Care in Danger Initiative by the ICRC Water and Habitat Unit and supported by the International Hospital Federation, Médecins Sans Fronitères and the World Health Organisation.
The tool seeks to:
1. Assess the current level of preparedness of any facility to continue operating in an insecure environment;
2. Identify which interventions should be prioritized to increase that level of preparedness.
The tool was completed in 2017 and has been applied in more than 10 countries, currently facing an armed conflict or high levels of violence. Key lessons learnt from the implementation in the field will also be shared.
