On 4 November, at the BIR Annual Congress,  Professor Stephan Achenbach, Professor of Cardiology, University of Erlangen, Germany  was awarded the prestigious Sir Godfrey Hounsfield Memorial Award, following delivery of a lecture entitled “Clinical Applications of Coronary CTA – View of a Cardiologist”.  He was presented with the award by President of the BIR, Mr Andy Rogers.

 

Stephan Achenbach is Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at the University Hospital in Erlangen, Germany. In 2002-2003, he held a position as Research Fellow at the Department of Radiology and Division of Cardiology, Massachusetts General Hospital, USA. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cardiovascular CT. From 2005 to 2007, Professor Achenbach served as the President of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography

Research interests include cardiac imaging by magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography with a special focus on non-invasive imaging of the coronary arteries. He has published more than 550 scientific papers on these topics in peer-reviewed journals.

Professor Achenbach said “I am delighted to receive this special award which is so closely linked with the pioneer of CT, Sir Godfrey Hounsfield  to whom we owe so much.”

 

Andy Rogers said “The BIR was extremely pleased to both award this honour to Professor Achenbach and to hear him lecture on such an important and topical issue. The audience was treated to an excellent description of the state of the art whilst being made aware of the remaining issues to be resolved. This lecture was one of the highlights of our Congress and I was delighted to give this award to such an internationally renowned and inspirational recipient.”

This award was established in 1977 in honour of Sir Godfrey Hounsfield and his pioneering work in computed tomography (CT). The lecture was initially endowed by Dr Marion Frank OBE, and subsequently funded from a bequest from Sir Godfrey Hounsfield.
