MEDICON, the three-day congress on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing, opened in Paphos, Cyprus today with delegates from Europe, North America and Asia participating and attending.

In the opening ceremony on Thursday evening, the Chairs, Constantinos S. Pattichis, Prodromos Kaplanis, Stelios Christofides and Efthyvoulos Kyriacou, representing healthcare, academia and the state health system in Cyprus, welcomed attendees

The goal of MEDICON 2016 is to provide updated information on the state of the art on Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing under the main theme “Systems Medicine for the Delivery of Better Healthcare Services,” the Chairs said in a welcome.

Their joint address was followed by a lively talk, Byzantine Medicine: a bridge form the Antique to the Renaissance by Prof. Zacharias A. Zachariou, Dean of the School of Medicine at The Universtiy of Cyprus.

Two actors recited the Hippocratic Oath adding a Hellenic character to the congress and hinting at the roots of modern medicine.

“Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing cover complementary disciplines that hold great promise for the advancement of research and development in complex medical and biological systems,” a spokesperson said. “Medicon 2016 provides a common platform for the cross fertilisation of ideas, and to help shape knowledge and scientific achievements by bridging complementary disciplines into an interactive and attractive forum under the special theme of the conference that is Systems Medicine for the Delivery of Better Healthcare Services.”

This year, MEDICON is focusing on Biomedical Signal Processing, Imaging and Image Processing, Bioinstrumentation, Biosensors and Bio-Micro/Nano Technologies, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology and Systems Biology, Biomechanics, Robotics and Rehabilitation and Biomedical Engineering Education & Society.
