Dr Malte Gerhold has been appointed as Director of Innovation and Improvement at the Health Foundation.

Malte was previously the Executive Director of Strategy and Intelligence at the Care Quality Commission, where he developed its approach to integrated care, innovation and improvement and new technologies. He was also Chief Integrated Care Officer at Birdie Care, a digital care platform transforming the way older people living at home are looked after, where he helped establish Birdie’s first collaboration between home and primary care. He started his career in academia and strategy consulting, before working in various roles supporting ministers and senior civil servants in the UK and abroad. See full biography below.

Malte will lead the Foundation’s work to encourage faster improvement and innovation in care, building on its grant programmes and improvement networks to provide insights and enable change across health and social care. He will also lead its work to explore how new technologies can provide the opportunities for better care quality, access and experience.

He replaces Will Warburton, who left the Health Foundation to become Managing Director at the Shelford Group in January 2022.

Malte will start his role in May 2022.

Dr Jennifer Dixon, Chief Executive of the Health Foundation, said:

‘As we recover from the pandemic, it’s more important than ever that the health and social care system is supported to innovate and bring about faster improvements to care.

‘Malte will lead the Health Foundation’s work in this area and has an incredibly impressive background in health care improvement, digital innovation, strategy and policy. He also brings direct experience of our networks and fellowships, having been a member of our Sciana health leaders' network and a board member of our Q community.

‘I’m absolutely thrilled he is joining the team and we look forward to him starting with us in May.’

Dr Malte Gerhold said:

‘I’m really excited to join such a great team at the Health Foundation and take on its fantastic work on innovation and improvement.

‘The last two years have shown the significant challenges we face in the UK with care capacity, resilience and quality, but have also started a new conversation and opportunity to genuinely change the way care is provided around people in their homes and in their community - supported by new ways of working across traditional boundaries and enabled by new technologies.

‘The Health Foundation can make a unique contribution to catalysing and supporting this change, and I’m looking forward to helping achieve this, working with its many partners - from care recipients and care professionals, to the public, private and third sectors.’
