19 March, 2019 - The European Society of Radiology (ESR) is pleased to announce the publication of the second edition of Esperanto, the ESR Guide to Clinical Audit in Radiology and Clinical Audit Tool, following its launch at ECR 2019. Esperanto is a free English language document developed by the ESR Audit and Standards Subcommittee of the ESR Quality, Safety and Standards Committee. It is designed to support European radiology departments in establishing and/or developing an internal programme of clinical audit, facilitating improvements in patient experience, care and outcomes.

Importantly, since February 2018, a functional programme of clinical audit (and re-audit) within all radiology departments is now mandatory across Europe, to comply with the radiation protection standards as outlined within the European Union Basic Safety Standard ( EU-BSS). This makes Esperanto an invaluable tool for all those involved in radiology service delivery.

The first section of Esperanto contains a clinical audit guide, explaining the fundamentals of audit process and practice and also clarifying the legal requirements around clinical audit as mandated within the EU-BSS. The second section contains a blank audit template, which can be adapted for local use and a further selection of 30 other audit templates. The majority of these templates relate to radiation protection and key EU-BSS standards, whilst the remainder relate to clinical practice and service provision, covering non-radiation protection topics. You can find out more about clinical audit and the value of Esperanto here.

The ESR strongly encourages all staff involved in radiology service delivery across Europe to read this important publication and to use the enclosed audit guide and tool to develop and enhance their local clinical audit practice for the benefit of their patients and to meet EU-BSS requirements.

You can access and download Esperanto on the ESR website right here.
