CHKS has announced the winners of its Top Hospitals 2016 national awards. These awards celebrate the success of healthcare and social care providers across the UK and internationally and include award categories for patient safety, quality of care and data quality. This year a new award category was introduced for excellence in delivering 24/7 emergency care.

The CHKS Top Hospitals 2016 awards were hosted by journalist and news presenter Cathy Newman and attended by over 250 guests. Leaders from across the healthcare sector attended the awards including: NHS England, the Department of Health and acute care providers. An after dinner speech was given by astrophysicist, NASA scientist and consultant anaesthetist, Dr Kevin Fong.

The CHKS Top Hospitals 2016 awards were made on the basis of an analysis of publicly available datasets and a number of criteria used to shortlist trusts.

Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust was the winner of the quality of care award. The award was made on the basis of performance in a number of areas including the length of time patients stay in hospital and rate of emergency re-admissions.

Data quality awards recognise the importance of clinical coding and data quality, and the essential role it plays in ensuring appropriate patient care. The year data quality awards were given to University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in England, Southern Health and Social Care Trust for Northern. Ireland, Scotland and Wales, Aspen Healthcare - Claremont Hospital for the independent sector, and Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust was the winner in the specialist category.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust was awarded for patient experience and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust won the new award, excellence in emergency care. Both awards included Friends and Family Test scores amongst their selection criteria.

In addition, The New Victoria Hospital, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, UK was the winner of its quality improvement award. This international award recognises significant improvements in patient care and patient experience as well as staff welfare, safety and morale.

"Our awards evening was a great success and helped to highlight those trusts that are performing better than their peers in a number of important areas such as safety, quality of care and data quality," Sarah Atkinson Managing director, CHKS.

As well as the national awards for patient experience, patient safety, quality of care and data quality, CHKS celebrates excellence amongst its own clients throughout the UK.
