HIMSS Analytics Europe has announced that the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in Germany has achieved Stage 7 of the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM). It is the first hospital in Europe to achieve the top rating on HIMSS Analytics’ EMRAM scale, which evaluates the digititalisation level of a hospital; stage 7 is awarded for achieving a paperless medical record environment. The University Hospital of Hamburg Eppendorf will be officially recognised for their achievements at the CIO Summit in Geneva, 20-22 November 2011.

“The University Hospital of Hamburg Eppendorf provides a blueprint for transforming healthcare through IT: in just three years it has implemented a hospital-wide IT system based on Soarian® Clinicals and Soarian® Health Archive from Siemens that allows the entire continuum of care to be managed through an electronic patient record. Paper is now superfluous. The benefits are apparent on several levels: thanks to IT systems, patient healthcare can now be delivered more quickly and to a higher standard," says Uwe Buddrus, CEO of HIMSS Analytics Europe.

"We are very excited about this award. The electronic patient record enables us to handle all patient documentation free of the restrictions of a paper-based environment and independently of location. Achieving this level of integration and such a high level of data security represents a milestone in healthcare. At the same time the best possible framework is in place for a future in which telemedicine will play a much greater role," says Dr Peter Gocke, Head of IT at UKE.

"UKE's electronic patient record is unrivalled in Europe. It goes without saying, of course, that as a university hospital we endeavour to make progress through innovation. The fact that UKE has, both nationally and internationally, made such an impression in so many areas, including the hospital IT arena, is outstanding and should make us all proud. Congratulations to the UKE IT team on such a fantastic achievement," said Dr Alexander Kirstein, Commercial Director and member of the UKE executive board.
