3D Systems and Stryker have announced an exclusive distribution partnership for VSP® (Virtual Surgical Planning) and anatomical models for the craniomaxillofacial specialty. This partnership is expected to promote the availability of personalised surgical planning and techniques to healthcare professionals. This, in turn, is expected to save both patients and surgeons hours in the operating room.

VSP technology was originally established by 3D Systems and was approved by the FDA as a service-based approach to personalised surgery. The VSP technology combines expertise in medical imaging, 3D printing, and surgical simulation. Surgeons can bring their clinical knowledge and their surgical plan to an online meeting with a 3D Systems biomedical engineer and can simulate and plan the entire surgical procedure. This would provide them with a digital plan that can then be transferred to the operating room via 3D printed models, guides, and templates.

“Collaborating with surgeons to deliver the best possible patient outcomes is of the utmost importance to our company,” said Kevin McAlea, executive vice president, general manager, metals and healthcare, 3D Systems. “With the advancement of 3D printing, combined with the surgeon’s ability to use our Virtual Surgical Planning and anatomical modelling technologies, a patient’s life can be forever changed. It provides surgeons with the ability to have a clear 3D visualization of a patient’s anatomy and to develop a customized surgical plan prior to even entering the operating room.”

3D Systems has already provided VSP in more than 100,000 cases while Stryker’s Craniomaxillofacial business provides patient-specific options and innovative solutions to promote efficiency in surgical suites. This new partnership will capitalise on Stryker’s specialised sales force with 3D Systems’ cutting-edge 3D printing and patient-specific solutions positions and will be able to provide a superior level of service to healthcare professionals. The partnership will also support the evolving needs of patients and accelerate innovation in the field of personalised medicine.

“We have a history of achieving positive patient outcomes working with Stryker,” said Katie Weimer, vice president, medical devices, 3D Systems. “I am so proud to partner with a world leader in medical technologies to deliver our innovative solutions – helping surgeons change the lives of their patients.”

3D Systems and Stryker will be partnering up in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia.
