Professor Luis Martí-Bonmatí is Director of the Medical Imaging Department at La Fe University and Polytechnic Hospital, Valencia (since 2010) and Chief of the Radiology Department at Hospital Quirón in Valencia (since 1997). He is the immediate Past President of the European Society of Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Radiology (ESGAR), of which he is a Fellow.
1. What are your key areas of interest and research?
I am mainly interested in abdominal radiology, the clinical performance of MR imaging, and imaging biomarkers development and innovation.
2. What are the major challenges in your field?
The use of quantitative radiology in clinical practice, the development and appropriate use of the clinical value of imaging, and the organisation of our profession in patient-oriented management.
3. What is your top management tip?
Keep the best professionals aligned with the department’s strategy and satisfied with their involvement.
4. What would you single out as a career highlight?
My involvement with different profesional societies (ESGAR, ESR, ESMRMB, ISR, SERAM, SEDIA), my participation in a research spinoff company (Quibim SL) and my commitments to medicine (Spanish Royal Academy of Medicine).
5. If you had not chosen this career path you would have become a…?
Maybe a biological or biochemical researcher. Those were my interests many years ago!
6. What are your personal interests outside of work?
Making wine and gardening. These are the best ways I know towards happiness!

Dr. Bonmatí served as President of the Spanish Society of Radiology (SERAM) from 2008-2010, and was the founder and first President of the Sociedad Española de Diagnóstico por Imagen del Abdomen (SEDIA) (Spanish Society of Abdominal Radiology) (2000-2007). In 2014 he was awarded the Gold Medal of SERAM.
He has been the academic correspondent for the Real de Medicina (Royal Academy of Medicine) since 2013. He is Associate Editor of European Radiology (Magnetic Resonance) and Radiology (Computer Applications) and he is an Editorial Board member of Cancer Imaging and Diagnostic Imaging Europe.
Dr. Bonmati is a Fellow of the European Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB) and served as President in 2002. He is a Fellow of the International Cancer Imaging Society (ICIS) and Director of the Association for the Development and Investigation of MR (ADIRM), Asociación para el Desarrollo y la Investigación en Resonancia Magnética a non-profit institution developed to impulse the relationships between universities and the MR phenomenon.
He is the Director of the Research Group on Biomedical Imaging (GIBI230) within La Fe Health Research Centre, an institution that belongs to the Spanish Research Network at the Ministry of Science and Technology. The group focuses on preclinical animal imaging experiments. He is co-founder of Quantitative Imaging Biomarkers in Medicine (QUIBIM), an innovative company specially dedicated to medical image processing, extraction and measurement of imaging biomarkers for the clinical routine, research projects or clinical trials and medical imaging workflows.
