Western General Hospital in Edinburgh, part of NHS Lothian's University Hospitals Division, has installed a SOMATOM® Definition AS+ CT from Siemens Healthcare and ordered its syngo®.via imaging software for rapid multi-modality clinical image reporting. The system is being used for neuroimaging, neuro perfusion, neuro intervention, spinal work, angiography and body scanning of the pelvis, head and neck.
Since installing the user-friendly Definition AS+, the system’s intervention package has enabled radiologists to visualise more than one image plane at a time and provided the necessary detail for direct control of needle positions. The sequential scanning area is also greater than the system it replaces meaning that larger areas can now be covered. Siemens report that the Definition’s high temporal resolution of up to 150 ms, combined with extremely fast coverage per rotation, delivers high quality image acquisition that is free of movement artifacts.
“The system is both intuitive and user friendly and we continue to be impressed by the image quality. Previously, scans were taking around 30 seconds and with the Definition AS+ this has been reduced to just a few seconds,” said Lesley McKinlay, Radiography Team Leader, DCN X-Ray at Western General Hospital. “The radiologists are also appreciating the in-room control panel which is used in conjunction with the in-room monitors during interventional procedures. This allows them to control table movements from the tableside and make changes to factors on the screens without having to re-enter the control room.”
