Din a few years, the AIIC National Conferences try to identify in advance a series of value and professional challenges (the digital ecosystem, the governance of technologies as a social challenge, the new and necessary technological culture....) that characterize the development of the debate on healthcare and the National Health Service. In the various editions of our Conference we have developed contents with an approach that AIIC has always promoted: that of concreteness, of the possibility of transferring the themes throughout the national territory and that of identifying the specific skills, role and responsibilities of clinical engineers.

In this already traced line, this year the Clinical Engineers focus on an emerging question: what contribution can innovation offer to achieve the objectives of effective technological transition and environmental sustainability that the healthcare system can propose? This is not an obvious question. We know how difficult it is to identify "what is really useful, available, concrete and measurable innovation". And we also know how healthcare risks being a great consumer of resources without apparent attention to the residues of a production strongly based on technologies. We want to try to better understand if and how technologies can also be a tool for sustainability beyond the moment of care, for example in terms of impact on the environment. Patients and facilities expect health responses based on increasingly personalized and specific technologies, but these same technologies should also make a new and fundamental contribution to an environmental sustainability that today is the objective of all mature societies.

How can all this be achieved? What contribution can health professionals make in this area? What role can the clinical engineer play in ensuring advanced technologies with low impact on the planet we live in? How can we manage and govern everything with specific attention also to the economic values that keep the overall system afloat?

We started from these questions to identify the themes that we want to launch in our 25th National Conference: Technologies, sustainability, environment. The contribution of innovation to the healthcare of the future . Naples is the city where all this will happen from 14 to 17 June at the Mostra l'Oltremare .

Naples, a fascinating metropolis that saw the realization of the 13th AIIC Conference in 2013 (it was entitled: “Medical devices and information technology”), and subsequently – in 2018 – the start of the experience of the AIIC National Meeting, which held its first edition here. It will certainly be a location not new, but prestigious for our work, a place from which our Association has often started with enthusiasm.

We are certain that we will be able to meet many of you at the 25th Conference of our Association: Naples awaits us in large numbers, participating and dynamic. And above all: convinced that we can contribute to building a renewed, universal, sustainable NHS. And also “clean”.
